Sleep Preserves and Enhances Traumatic Memories

A recent study by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the first to suggest that, after witnessing a traumatic event, a person’s emotional response is greatly reduced if the person stays awake afterward. Sleep seems to strongly “protect” the negative emotional response. A good night’s sleep may only serve to amplify – and not decrease – memories of the trauma. Continue reading
